QwikChat Development
latest developments in QwikChat
QwikChat™ is currently (March 2006) undergoing development. A small alpha release has been made of the core, which does not showcase much functionality, to be honest. The core is written in Java and requires JRE 1.4 or later to run, although it may be possible to run it with an older version, it is not supported.
alpha2 (?)
This is an upcoming release, and will feature a rudimentary GUI, building upon
an improved core, included in the alpha1 release. Right now, I'm investigating a new
contact/buddy list look-and-feel. The screenshot on the right shows off a design that
will most likely be scrapped due to an inherent complexity in its implementation,
although something similar might be chosen.
Single-window for everything app-related?
- Google Talk: single window for login, contact list, etc.
- AIM: single-window for login, logout (disappears after logging in); another window for buddy list
alpha1 (2006-01-02)
QwikChat alpha1 sports an IRC interface to Jabber/XMPP. Basically, you fire up the QwikChat core with your JID and password. It will then bind to TCP port 6667 (the standard IRC port), and wait for connections from localhost (for security reasons). Once you connect to the IRC "server" running on localhost, the core will connect to the Jabber server and join you to the main control channel for QwikChat.
